There are few things more satisfying than a great set of dice. But some may find themselves asking, aren’t all dice the same? If they’re balanced and roll statistically random odds, what else matters? Oh, sweet summer goblin, it matters. The right set of dice can set the mood, make you feel more connected with your character, or just add a fun aesthetic to your table and game. You don’t have to believe in dice superstitions to love these colorful math rocks; many of us Dice Goblins don’t. That the right set of dice, or an expansive collection, can give us a special thrill like no other object.
Runic Dice’s Fluorite and Gold Dice
These stone dice a cool to the touch, with a beautiful mix of green, purple, and white variegation. The painted gold numbers, slightly recessed, have withstood months of handling with no visible fading. The fluorite provides a comforting weight to the dice and a pleasing sound when rolled. The only drawback to the set is that one must roll them on a mat or padded dice tray, due to the brittle nature of the stone. Fortunately, Runic Dice, the makers of this beautiful set, send a card with care information about their products, to let you know in advance. Additionally, Runic Dice package their gaming dice sets in a lovely grey velvet box with a foam insert that holds the dice snuggly in place. The box is also stamped with a gold-colored Celtic knot on the lid, which has held up against the curiosity of my six-year-old child. Some of the dice, particularly the D6, can be hard to remove from the foam insert. However, I know that they are held securely in place, and will not fly out of the box if I open it in haste to roll an unexpected perception check.
I will admit that I do not know a great deal about stone, or fluorite in particular, but they seem to be of good quality with no obvious imperfections. When held up to the light, each dice has its own mix of colors, swirling together in interesting, natural patterns. They are well polished and free of chips or scratches and the seraph, old English style numbers are cleanly etched and painted. All of these are indications of the pride Runic Dice take in their products.
I prefer this gorgeous set when I am running Enoch, my Aasimar Scourge Battle Master. Their old-world look and feel set the mood for my Nordic warrior, whether he is in the heat of battle or negotiating a contract in the name of his god, Tyr. And did I mention the satisfying sound they make when they're rolled?
The People Behind the Dice
Being a devoted dice goblin, I took the opportunity to buddy up to the people at Runic Dice and it seems to be a homegrown operation. Jeff, who was kind enough to correspond with me, told me that the company started out creating and selling artwork and apparel, but wanted to “offer something more meaningful and special.” Unsatisfied with the number of high-end dice makers in the US, Runic dice began making stone dice and partnering with other artisan dice makers.
Jeff and his wife play Vampire the Masquerade and DnD 5e in their free time. While Jeff’s favorite character is his Bard (a classic for sure), I was delighted to find out about his wife’s “murder hobo Rogue.” You got a keeper, Jeff. She rolls a beautiful set of Watermelon Cats Eye dice and Jeff favors Runic Dice’s recently released Potion Dice set. You can check them out in the links below.
In summation, if you would like to support small businesses (and you should), I highly recommend Runic Dice. They have a wide selection of stone and glass dice, as well as fun TTRPG related art and apparel. Linked below is their Etsy and Facebook accounts for your viewing pleasure. Please support these wonderful people and their amazing company.
